Job Description

Job Summary:

FLA is seeking a full-time Band and Strings Music Director for the 2026-2027 school year. The school is looking for an energetic, dedicated and inspirational music teacher who fosters and maintains an excellent music program, while engaging students and helping them develop a personal relationship with Jesus. FLA’s music program is a hallmark of the school which is robust and active in the community and local churches. The music department includes two full time directors and numerous music groups including:

  • Concert Band: 54 students
  • Jazz Band: 20 students
  • Strings: 27 students
  • Voices (choir): 85 students
  • Cantabile (select choir): 38 students
  • Solid Bronze (handbells): 13 students
The ideal candidate will be passionate about young people and possess strong musical knowledge, performance ability, and pedagogical skills, with the ability to motivate students to bring the best out of them. The teacher must be a team player and be able to work in a collaborative and collegial manner with the other high school teachers in managing a holistic program for high schoolers. Responsibilities may include other school duties as assigned by administration. Skills, Education, and Experience Required:

Applicant must be a tithe-paying Seventh-day Adventist church member in good standing and have the legal right to work in the United States, providing evidence if employed. A minimum of a bachelor's degree with North American Division (Denominational) Teacher Certification in music is required and must be maintained (or must agree to work towards obtaining NAD Certification). A master's degree in music education and/or instrumental conducting and successful experience teaching high school band and string ensembles is preferred. Applicant must be able to manage a large rehearsal room and effectively supervise and engage students, as well as have the knowledge of varied learning styles and the skill to analyze and evaluate student progress. Must have a service-oriented attitude; be an effective communicator possessing excellent verbal and written communication skills; and be able to positively engage with students and families of diverse backgrounds, regardless of language, ethnicity, race, or socioeconomic status. Possessing competent technology skills using current educational software and hardware is essential. Additional traits should include organization, attention to detail, being self-directed, and being motivated. Absolute confidentiality is required. Curriculum familiarity, content knowledge, and proficiency in instructional delivery are crucial. Most importantly, the applicant must possess a love for God, a love for working with children, and a desire to see each child in Heaven.


Job Responsibilities:

The teacher will be expected to:

  • Promote the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy, ensuring that all subject matter is taught from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective based on curriculum guidelines and requirements of the North American Division, Southern Union Conference, and Florida Conference
  • Establish and maintain a Christian atmosphere within the classroom and campus
  • Develop and submit weekly lesson plans to the principal or vice principal as required
  • Develop long-term yearly/semesterly/quarterly plans and goals for each subject
  • Teach instrumental techniques, music theory, sight-reading, and performance skills for various instruments
  • Recruit students, host auditions, assign positions, and track progress
  • Lead concert band and string orchestra rehearsals, selecting appropriate music for diverse skill levels; deliver engaging and effective instruction to students and monitor student understanding; create a positive, engaging and motivating learning environment
  • Use a variety of evaluation techniques to provide feedback and communicate progress, providing opportunities for students to learn from mistakes as well as successes
  • Utilize appropriate classroom management techniques conducive to an effective classroom climate that facilitate student engagement and continuity
  • Manage instrument inventory, oversee maintenance and repair, handle instrument check-outs/returns, and maintain an organized and up to date music library
  • Effectively collaborate with administration, other music groups, and colleagues in the planning of music programs, trips, tours, music festivals, and church performances
  • Plan an annual tour and various church performances
  • Participate as an active member in school life with other faculty and staff; foster and maintain a professional relationship with students, parents, colleagues, and administration
  • Maintain accurate and organized student class records (attendance, grades, progress reports, etc.) on the school's Student Information System (SIS) in compliance with administration
  • Provide motivating, timely and constructive feedback to students and parents on the SIS
  • Communicate with parents regularly through parent/teacher conferences, phone calls, or written communications, keeping them well-informed
  • Be willing to grow professionally; participate in personal professional growth activities focused on the acquisition of new and improved skills and knowledge
